Where Do CBD and THC Come From?

Both CBD and THC naturally originate from the cannabis plant, but they are commonly sourced from different varieties. CBD is most often extracted from hemp, a variety of Cannabis sativa that contains no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight. THC is typically sourced from marijuana plants, a variety of Cannabis sativa plants that contain much higher concentrations of THC.

The legal status of the two types of cannabis plants also differs. The 2018 US Farm Bill federally legalized hemp and hemp-derived products provided they contain no more than 0.3% THC. While many states have implemented their own marijuana programs with varying regulations, marijuana plants and products remained federally illegal under the 2018 Farm Bill. However, the federal legality of marijuana products is changing; in April 2026, the Acting Attorney General issued an order that immediately reclassified state-licensed medical cannabis to a Schedule III substance, a less restrictive category. The DEA is currently considering whether to more broadly reschedule marijuana and marijuana products to a Schedule III substance, though it is not known when a decision will be announced.

Both CBD and THC interact with the endocannabinoid system, but they do so differently.

Your endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is the network of receptors and messengers that regulate many vital bodily processes, including pain and inflammation after physical activity, mild stress, nausea, memory, mood, immune function and more. Your body has two main types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1, located primarily in the brain and central nervous system, and CB2 receptors, located primarily within the peripheral nervous system.1

Pain and Inflammation

One of the most common reasons people compare THC versus CBD when considering cannabis products is pain relief. 

Several studies have shown promise regarding THC, and cannabis products with high levels of THC, reducing pain, though much of the research is preliminary. One study looking at the effect of cannabis on chronic low back pain found that patients taking medical cannabis experienced “large and durable improvements in pain and disability,” and that use of both opioids and NSAID medications decreased.2 Another study, this one from the University of Minnesota, found that patients enrolled in the state’s medical cannabis program reported decreased interference to life enjoyment and general activity from pain symptoms four months after starting medical cannabis.3 Both studies noted the need for additional research on the topic.

Similarly, much of the research into pain and CBD, or cannabis products with high levels of CBD and low levels of THC, is also in the early stages. But in a 2025 study from McGill University looking specifically at CBD use by Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes, 77% of athletes who reported using CBD agreed that it helped reduce pain from training.4 A December 2019 customer survey from CBDistillery found similar results, with 84% of respondents reporting that CBD helped with pain after physical activity.

Anxiousness and Stress

Another frequent reason people compare CBD to THC is when considering cannabis products for relief of anxiousness or stress.

CBD is often chosen by people seeking to increase calmness and manage stress. One study looking at broad spectrum CBD oils and CBD isolate oils found that both types of products were highly effective and able to assist with stress management.5 A meta analysis of eight studies on CBD and anxiousness found that CBD reportedly reduced pre-stress scores, scores during stress induction and post-stress scores. According to the same meta analysis, CBD patients experienced symptom reductions of approximately 25% and 16% compared to 0% and 4% for patients given a placebo.6

Research into THC, or high-THC marijuana products, and anxiety has shown mixed results. A 2025 observational study found that use of medical cannabis was associated with significant decreases in self-reported anxiousness and depression, though it noted that median doses of THC yielded a greater reduction than higher or lower doses.7 But other studies have shown different results. A 2020 systemic review of 35 studies on the topic reported that human clinical data consistently showed isolated THC causing anxiety.8

Sleep is another area where the effects of CBD and THC differ.

Several studies have shown potential for CBD to improve quality and quantity of sleep. One recent systemic review, which critically evaluated 34 studies looking at the effect of CBD on insomnia, suggested that CBD may be beneficial in alleviating symptoms of insomnia.9 Other studies have shown that CBD may hold promise for improving sleep10 and for REM sleep behavior disorder.11

Research into THC and sleep has, like research into anxiety, shown more mixed results. Over the years, some studies have found that THC usage might impair REM; however, a 2025 systemic review and meta analysis of existing studies on the topic noted that some of these studies used small sample sizes or very high doses of THC (up to 210mg).12 The review suggested that the effects of THC on REM sleep might be dose-dependent and that lower doses of THC (2.5-15mg per night) might cause minimal or no REM impairment.

One of THC’s most well-known effects is its ability to cause intoxication. THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the “high” effect people often associate with marijuana. THC can also cause drowsiness or sedation, increased appetite and altered sensory perception, as well as the potential for pain relief mentioned above.

Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn’t cause intoxication or a “high” feeling. Federal and State Regulations

At the federal level, hemp plants and products derived from hemp which contain no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight are currently legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. Marijuana plants, which contain higher percentages of THC, and products derived from them are illegal under the 2018 Farm Bill, though efforts are underway at the federal level to reschedule them.
