Giving Tuesday began as a social media promotion organized by a small group of nonprofits. On the first Giving Tuesday in 2012, New York City’s 92nd Street Y joined forces with Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact. Organizers wanted to kick off a season of generosity, so they created a hashtag, invited public participation, and sparked the fire of a global movement.1,2 Today, the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday marks the beginning of a global season of charitable giving that helps an impressive number of nonprofits do what they do best.

Founded in 2007, Project Sanctuary was built on the principle that when a person serves in the military, their entire family also serves. Therapeutic Retreats

Supporting Project Sanctuary helps the organization host therapeutic retreats in eight states across the country. Programs are designed and staffed by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, licensed social workers, and counselors. Therapeutic Retreats and outdoor recreational activities help families break down relationship barriers, learn new ways to communicate, find effective ways to resolve conflict, and more.

Family Support

Project Sanctuary also helps provide financial assistants and long-term (or emergency) mental health services. All project Sanctuary Family Support services are led by licensed, clinically trained staff and are available for all veterans, active-duty service members, and their children and spouses. The organization also provides counseling referrals and connections to services provided by collaborating agencies and partners.

Resource Summits

Destination Resource Weekends are uniquely focused on the individual needs of every participant. These carefully orchestrated weekends help couples (and singles) identify the resources needed to help their family move forward, whether they might need help connecting with financial planning services, employment resources, services for psychological and emotional wellbeing, or recreational opportunities. The goal of each program and service provided by Project Sanctuary is to help military families heal and thrive.
