How Long Do CBD Gummies Last?

In recent years, CBD gummies have surged in popularity as a convenient and tasty way to incorporate cannabidiol into daily routines. These chews offer a practical, consistently measured option for those looking to experience the potential benefits of CBD, such as relaxation, stress relief, and better sleep.

Curious about the duration of CBD gummies' effects? This guide breaks down how long CBD gummies last and what factors influence their longevity.

How CBD Gummies Work in the Body: Factors Influencing Onset & Duration

Compared to CBD oil tinctures and topicals, it takes longer for the effects of CBD gummies (and other edibles) to peak because the cannabinoid is processed through your digestive system before circulating through your bloodstream. Based on decades of study, we know CBD asserts its influence on multiple molecular targets, including the receptors of the serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) systems.3

But it's the cannabinoid's impact on the endocannabinoid system (ECS) most often credited for CBD's positive impact on so many seemingly unrelated concerns. Cannabis researchers believe its indirect influence on ECS receptors supports homeostasis, or mind-body balance.3 Most sources suggest CBD edibles take 1-2 hours to make their presence known for effects that last 4-6 hours for most CBD users.

There are multiple factors at play impacting how long it can take for CBD to assert that influence.3 Let's take a look at a few.

The Amount of CBD Per Serving

CBD concentrations can vary considerably from one crop to the next. Reputable brands such as CBDistillery protect consumers by confirming the CBD content of their products through third-party batch testing. You can protect yourself by consistently verifying claims of third-party test results. If you can't find a certificate of analysis (COA), shop elsewhere. Although 75% of CBD brands claim their products are tested by an independent lab, only 13% submit samples for at least 90% of their products.4 These discrepancies could impact how long it will take for CBD to come into effect in your system.

Body Composition & Metabolism

CBD and other plant-based cannabinoids are lipid-soluble, meaning a lean person who is physically active metabolizes (and eliminates) CBD faster than a person with a higher BMI who might have a higher percentage of each serving stored in adipose tissues. If 30% is stored, for example, only 70% of the cannabinoids available after ingestion circulate in the bloodstream. Age, genetics, lack of sleep, and other factors impacting metabolic function can also impact onset timing and duration.

Frequency of Use

A considerable number of people are pleased with the results of applying CBD topically after an intense workout or keeping a jar of gummies on hand for the occasional sleepless night. But many people find they get the best results when using hemp-derived CBD products consistently to keep their intake of cannabinoids stable. According to a 2019 CBDistillery® survey of 1,900 customers, most respondents reported achieving positive results within 7-14 days of consistent daily use.

Serving Sizes Suggestions: The Benefit of Starting Low and Slow

Based on the feedback of our 2019 survey respondents, most CBD users report favorable results using our hemp-derived products for relaxation, better sleep, discomfort and inflammation after physical activity, and mild or temporary anxiety. You won't know exactly how your system will respond to ECS support until you choose a product and try it, but you may not want to start with the serving size suggestion printed on our product labels.

Every CBD user has a unique physical chemistry, meaning an amount that works for someone else could be significantly different than the serving size that's right for you. Instead, we suggest starting with half of a gummy. If a partial serving doesn't provide the results you're hoping for, increase your serving sizes gradually in small increments. Some first-timers move on to a full gummy with their next serving; others wait a few days (or more) between increases to give their systems time to adapt and respond. The choice is yours.

How Long the Effects of CBD Gummies Typically Last

Ingestible CBD products need to be processed through your digestive system before entering your bloodstream. While individual experiences vary, most people experience a noticeable difference within an hour or two. The effects of capsules, gummies, and other edibles peak around the three-hour mark and can last up to 8 hours. However, this timing can vary from person to person.2

How Long CBD Stays in Your System

If you've been wondering how long it takes for your body to eliminate the CBD in your system, you need to know that there's no single, universally accepted answer. While you may find several sources suggesting the cannabinoid is no longer detectable after several days, that doesn't hold true for everyone. For some, varying concentrations can be detected for several weeks after using CBD for the last time.1,2

Why such discrepancies? Because the following variables influence how the cannabinoid is metabolized and stored in the body.

Key Factors That Influence How Long CBD Gummies Last

Body Composition

CBD is lipid-soluble, meaning it's broken down by fat. Studies also show that any CBD not immediately utilized by the body is stored in fat cells. That means someone with a higher percentage of body fat could potentially be storing more CBD in their system than someone who's leaner. When fat is ultimately converted to energy, CBD reserves are released into the bloodstream.5

Metabolic Rate

Your metabolic rate determines how much energy your body requires to carry out the basic functions necessary for your survival. In general, men tend to have a higher metabolism than women, so they usually metabolize CBD faster. So do people who carry more lean muscle. Studies also show that those ingesting CBD on an empty stomach typically metabolize the cannabinoid more efficiently.

Frequency and Amount

Anyone who's been ingesting large amounts of CBD over several days could find that the cannabinoid lingers in their system longer. The same holds true for those using lesser amounts over a long period of time because of the way the cannabinoid accumulates in the body. That natural accumulation is no cause for concern but does explain why first-time users are typically advised to start with a small amount of CBD and increase gradually.11

Product Type

A 2018 study found that a single serving of CBD taken orally has a half-life of 2-5 days.8 The half-life of any substance is determined by how long it takes half of the amount ingested to be processed and expelled. CBD generally requires 5.5 half-life cycles to be eliminated completely. That same study also shows that CBD's half-life is considerably lower when inhaled.9,10

How to Make CBD Gummies Last Longer (or Work Better)

There are also several other things you can do to boost your odds of a favorable experience.

Try Enjoying Your Gummies with Food

Enjoying the health and wellness potential of CBD gummies on an empty stomach is absolutely fine. Current evidence, however, suggests their effects are stronger and longer lasting when combined with food. Study participants had four times more CBD in their systems after a high-fat meal than subjects taking CBD while fasting. The increase in bioavailability with low-fat foods was less impactful.12

Consider Your Activity Levels

If you feel that the effects of your CBD gummies are taking too long to optimize, consider increasing your activity levels to help boost your metabolism. A more efficient metabolism could easily translate to faster absorption rates and affect onset. If your regular serving sizes make you feel a bit sluggish on days you're more sedentary, on the other hand, try reducing your consumption to compensate for inactivity.

Stay Hydrated

As stated earlier, the cannabinoids in CBD gummies could make your mouth feel dry. Although cannabidiol does not cause dehydration, its impact on the ECS receptors on your salivary glands could temporarily decrease saliva production and make your mouth feel dry. Sipping water throughout the day, avoiding caffeine, chewing gum, and running a humidifier while you're sleeping could help.

Avoid Medications and Alcohol

CBD gummies are not ideal for people with certain conditions. They can also interact with over-the-counter treatments, prescription medications, and alcohol. CBD and alcohol, for example, interact with specific neurotransmitters in the brain. When used together, CBD could alter how alcohol processes, intensify its intoxicating properties, impair motor function, and amplify alcohol's sedating effects.13

Consumer Safety: CBD's Possible Side Effects & Potential Risks

Hemp-derived CBD products are generally well-tolerated and safe for most adults. There's little risk of chemical dependency or withdrawal symptoms, and the World Health Organization found "no evidence of public health-related problems."14 But like any other plant oil or extract, side effects are possible. Some CBD users find that oral administration can cause dry mouth, fatigue, changes in appetite, nausea, or diarrhea15 – symptoms that often resolve with smaller serving sizes.

At this point, it's important to note that CBD may not be the best choice for everyone. Cannabidiol, tetrahydrocannabinol, and other plant-derived cannabinoids can cause adverse effects for people diagnosed with certain medical conditions. CBD can also interact with or interfere with the absorption of several prescription medications, over-the-counter treatments, and herbal supplements.16,17 If you have questions or concerns, consult your healthcare provider.
